Wexford PA – The North Catholic Trojans entered this new season with high expectations after last year's early playoff exit in the quarterfinal against Elizabeth Forward. The first match up was against Seton LaSalle, the top team in 2A. Both the Trojans and Rebels met last season in a tight game that ended in a North Catholic defeat 23-12.
This season, the Trojans have the advantage of experience with seventeen seniors on the squad. With this experience comes chemistry, something two players in particular made history with last season. QB Joey Felitsky led the WPIAL in passing yardage with 2,340, while WR Ryker Kennedy was first in receptions with 83. The last same-team duo to accomplish this feat was in 2008. The Trojans were gaining a lot of attention over the offseason and were ranked as one of the top teams under the radar in 3A. Now, they just had to prove their talent with a huge win over Seton LaSalle.
North Catholic got off to a great start in the first quarter as senior RB Logan Schade capped off an opening 65-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. He then scored again on a 19-yard run to put the Trojans up 13-0. Just a few minutes later, junior CB Will Waskiewicz intercepted a Jack Meade pass and returned it 29 yards for another touchdown. Seton LaSalle scored on the first play of the second quarter as Meade found Matthew Brodzinski in stride for a 52-yard touchdown, coming withing 13 points, 20-7. North Catholic then rounded out their first-half blowout with a pair of 40 and 34-yard touchdowns from Ryker Kennedy. In between this action, senior TE Tom Arth scored on a 5-yard fumble return after a high snap. In the third quarter, Logan Schade added yet another touchdown on a 10-yard run to activate the mercy rule and give the Trojans a commanding 47-7 lead. The Rebels made one last effort late in the third, with Kymarr Freeman's 26-yard running touchdown, but it was not enough as North Catholic pulled out a dominant win, 47-14.
This could not have been a better start for the Trojans, as the team executed well and showed that they can be a top competitor. The team looks to carry this momentum into their game this Friday as they will face the Knoch Knights (0-1) at Lieutenant JC Stone Field. Kickoff is at 7:00pm. You can also catch the game live on the North Catholic Sports Network.
