In only its second year as team, the North Catholic boy's tennis team is dominating the court yet again. This spring the team completed its sectional season 7-0 in overall matches, 35-0 in individual matches, and 70-0 in sets played. After finishing second to Valley last year in sections, the boys were motivated to come back and avenge their loss, and they did just that. This season they defeated Valley 5-0.
On Wednesday, April 13th, senior Nicolas Scheller competed in the WPIAL AA singles tennis championships. He soared through every round, only losing a total of five games, and defeated Mike Sirriani 6-0 in both sets in the final round. He will continue onto the state championships representing the WPIAL as the first seed.
On Wednesday, April 27th, senior Brody Golla, and junior Alex Garvey competed in the WPIAL AA doubles tennis championships. They defeated South Park and will continue to compete in the state championships. The win was important for both athletes, as they qualified last season, and were seeded No. 2, but COVID prevented them from competing. Both athletes believed that winning the first set played a key role in helping them win the second set.
The team is currently competing in the WPIAL playoffs and is favored to secure one of the top three spots, which will qualify them for the PIAA Boys Tennis State Championships. The team coach, Eric Solverson said, "It's an incredible luxury to win 2 of 4 and not 3 of 5. With Nic, you can generally count on that as a win," Solverson said. "Our doubles was a little weak last year, but these guys worked hard, and we have not lost an individual match in section all year." The team flew through the first round, dominating Blackhawk, the 15th seed, 5-0. In the second round the team had a clean sweep, defeating Montour 5-0.
The PIAA State team championships will take place later this month on May 20-21 at Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The PIAA State singles, and doubles championships will also take place later this month on May 27-28 at Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
