Shootout Success

Cranberry Twp. PA – The North Catholic Trojans were coming off a huge division win against the #1 ranked Moon Tigers last week 5-1. Senior F Beckett Dunn notched 2 goals in the win and Junior G Wyatt Cleveland stopped 26 of 27 shots faced. Another big match up was ahead with the Indiana Indians who ended North's playoff run last season in the quarterfinal. The lone goal was scored early in the 1st period by F Jackson Albert. The Trojans would seek revenge Tuesday night, and with F Beckett Dunn out of the lineup, the team looked for underclassmen to rise to the challenge.

The Game – Both teams went scoreless in the 1st period as Indiana G Luke Rowe stopped all 12 shots on goal from North Catholic. Despite these numbers, the Trojans had yet to get any quality opportunities on net, struggling with puck movement in the offensive zone. Indiana had troubles as well until F Brady Oakes scored after miscommunication behind the net, which caused a Trojan turnover. North Catholic increased the physicality mid-2nd period, gaining momentum. The Trojans soon found the back of the net with a tap-in from Senior F John Pontello that tied the game 1-1. The original shot was from F Quinn Lee who went between-the-legs after crashing the net as Pontello got the finish. Heading into the 3rd period, both teams exchanged scoring chances as it was a goal tending dual between Rowe and Cleveland. The game remained tied, which meant overtime for North Catholic. This still would not be enough as both teams then went to a shootout. Junior F Anthony Neely scored in the 2nd round, which led to G Wyatt Cleveland making the game-winning save denying F Jackson Albert for a much-needed victory over Indiana 2-1.

Analysis – North Catholic out-shot Indiana 33-26, with G Wyatt Cleveland posting a .962 SV%. F Quinn Lee (1 A) and F John Pontello (1 G) each had a point in the effort while F Anthony Neely scored in the shootout. The Trojans went 0 for 2 on the power play, but a perfect 1 for 1 on the penalty kill. Earning two more points, the team still remains 4th in the Varsity A Blue Division, while Indiana moved to 6th. North Catholic's next game will be against Butler at Frozen Pond Arena Monday, January 6th. Puck drop is at 7:10pm.
