WPIAL 4A Baseball Championship

Washington, PA -  The Trojans fell behind by four runs early, but the bats woke up in the middle innings as they rallied past  #9 Indiana 7-5, in the WPIAL Class 4A final Wednesday at Wild Things Park in Washington, PA.  As the #6 seed, North (17-4) earned its fifth WPIAL baseball title and first since 2018 with the win. The Trojans beat Indiana (13-10) twice during Section 4-4A play in the regular season and completed the sweep in comeback fashion.

Indiana led 5-1 after three innings, but Landon Eifler got the rally started for the Trojans by plating two runs in the fourth on a one-out single that was misplayed on the hop by Indiana's right fielder.  Tommy Koroly tripled to lead off the fifth and was brought in by an RBI single by Ryan Shantz. Owen Beatrice singled in Shantz, which tied the game. Joe Safar ripped a double to center field, which scored Beatrice and gave the Trojans the lead. Safar had the only multi-hit game for North Catholic as he recorded a triple earlier in the game.  The Trojans ended up with four of their seven hits in the fifth after chasing Indiana starter and Texas Tech recruit Greg Minnick.

After giving up five runs over two innings, Senior Tommy Schafale settled in and pitched a complete game. He retired 12 of the last 15 batters he faced.

The Trojans will continue their season in the state tournament starting Monday.  Games details for the PIAA first round are still to be determined.

Listen to NCSN's call of the game with Callie Mardis and Colin Campbell from Wild Things Park.
