After an extremely successful track season last year, ending in multiple WPIAL and state individual titles, the 2022 track season is underway. The team has attended two scrimmages, travelling to Butler and Freedom, an invitational, and a section meet at South Side so far this season.
Earlier this month, on Saturday, April 2nd, individuals on the team competed in the Butler County Classic held at Seneca Valley High School. The meet was successful for the entirety of the team, and multiple athletes broke their own personal records. Senior Tehya Dave placed first in both the 100 and 200m dashes and set both a personal and school record in both events. Additionally, senior Alaina Hicks, who recently committed to Duquesne University for Cross Country and Track, placed first in the 1600m run. On the boys team, senior Trevor Paschall placed first in the 100 and 200m dashes.
Over the past few years, both the girls and boys teams have seen significant growth. This year, both teams have a record number of athletes, totaling around 70. Senior Trevor Paschall, who committed to the University of North Carolina in the fall for track said, "The track team is big this year with around 70 athletes, and we are off to a strong start. Practices have been tough but being at Freedom has made a big difference. We have been starting with some longer workouts to get ready during the early phase of the season. I expect for the team (both boys and girls) to have a shot at a section championship and a lot of individual success at WPIALs/States".
Both the girls and boys teams will travel to South Side High School on Tuesday, April 12th for a section meet against Rochester, South Side, and Aliquippa at 3:30pm. On Thursday, April 14th, individuals on the boys and girls teams will compete in the TSTCA Invitational, a competitive invitational with nearly 50 teams competing, at West Mifflin High School starting at 11:00 am.
