Trojanettes Make History, Advance to First-Ever PIAA Playoffs

Softball

Cranberry Twp, PA - Facing adversity has become second nature for the North Catholic softball team — and the Trojanettes wouldn't have it any other way in their history making season.  This Spring, the team has earned its first-ever trip to the PIAA playoffs following a resilient and memorable WPIAL postseason run.

The Trojanette's postseason identity was defined in the quarterfinal round — an instant classic against No. 2 Knoch.  Trailing by three runs twice, the No. 7-seeded Trojanettes refused to back down. After clawing back late to force extra innings, North exploded for five runs in the 10th inning to secure a 13-10 victory.

The win showcased the heart of a team that has thrived in pressure moments all season. Kennedy Brown delivered one of the most impressive individual performances in program postseason history, going 5-for-6 with six RBIs, including a grand slam that gave North its first lead.

"That was my first home run of the season, and I'm glad it came in a big game," Brown said.

North piled up 15 hits in the high-scoring affair, while Clare Kotwica earned the win in relief — her second straight extra-inning victory during the playoffs.

The Trojanettes were battle-tested even before that quarterfinal thriller.

In the opening round against West Mifflin, North walked off the Titans in another 10-inning game, winning 6-5 after Dakota Hicks delivered a game-winning double. Mary Kotwica added three hits in the victory, while Clare Kotwica dominated in relief with seven strikeouts over 7 innings.

Those early playoff moments helped shape the team's confidence and resilience.

The Trojanette's run to the WPIAL semifinals — the first in program history — ended against Blackhawk.

A nine-run second inning proved too much to overcome in a 13-4 loss, despite the Trojanettes collecting 11 hits, including multi-hit performances from Kennedy Brown and Mary Kotwica

While the result wasn't what North hoped for, the game underscored the team's ability to compete offensively against top competition. The Trojanettes quickly turned the page — and once again showed their resilience.

In a WPIAL consolation matchup, North rallied late to defeat Hampton, 4-3. Trailing in the seventh inning, Dakota Hicks delivered the decisive blow with a two-run double, sending North to the state playoffs. Kennedy Brown earned the complete-game victory in the circle, while also collecting three hits at the plate. The win officially secured North Catholic's place in the PIAA tournament — the first appearance in school history.

The Trojanettes are set to begin their PIAA playoff run on Monday, June 1, when they travel to take on District 10 champion, Harbor Creek.  Game time is set for 4:00pm at Harbor Creek High School.
